Employee Motivation

Employee motivation is a very important factor for any business. A motivated employee performs at a much higher level than an unmotivated employee of the same talent and skill level. This is why managers and supervisors spend so much time and put so much emphasis on recognizing and praising employee contributions, no matter how large or small.

Finding a proper balance can be difficult. While employee incentives (ie gifts or cash bonuses) can be a power motivational tool, they can also become quite expensive. And lose their effect if overused. Managers need to be careful with the frequency of these types of incentive programs.

Many studies have shown that most employees crave for and respond effectively to recognition and appreciation being shown for their efforts. Both from their "boss" and their co-workers. A simple pat on the back is often all it takes to encourage someone to maintain their current level of energy and reach for another level of personal success.

It is a proven fact that motivating your employees can go a long way towards creating a fun workplace. One in which office morale is sky high, where employees get along well with their co-workers, where employees take the initiative to help each other become more successful, where workers and management function smoothly as one solid unit, where sales and customer satisfaction numbers soar into the stratosphere!

In a nutshell, motivating your employees will help to make the workplace more fun and less tedious.

The question for management has always been how to produce this much desired spirit in a cost- and time-effective manner. Most experts suggest a multi-pronged approach be employed to attain the most favorable results while holding down the costs, both in real dollars and in time.

Managers and Supervisors should:

  • Actively watch for elements of an employee's performance to praise on a daily basis
  • Voice your appreciation for a job well done whenever the opportunity arises
  • Use one employee's success as a teaching tool for the rest of your team
  • Recognize employee successes with something which will be a tangible reminder for both the recipient and their co-workers
  • Find a cost effective way to show your appreciation on at least a weekly basis
  • Use your daily and/or weekly motivational methods in such a way that they build and grow over the course of the month or year
  • Save special incentives such as gifts or cash bonuses to be used as a Grand Prize of sorts

Using the above techniques as a guideline you will involve more people in the process. A person who is consistantly among the top in sales may be competing for the Grand Prize with someone who is not as strong in sales, but who has a stronger talent in customer satisfaction. A team members who is reknowned for the speed with which they perform their job may be in competition for the Grand Prize with someone who is steady to the point that they have never missed a day or minute of work.

The most effective managers use the various strengths of their team to help each member improve in an area where they may not be as strong as someone else. The most effective supervisors get their team working together so well, all pulling in the same direction, that the team members themselves become defacto trainers for each other. They learn together, each helping one another in an area they excel.

The bottom line is that when a Team truly becomes one cohesive unit everyone benefits. Individual employees become more successful. The team becomes much more than just the sum of its parts. The morale at work begins to climb higher and higher. And the business as a whole improves on every level... sales, customer satisfaction, office morale and employee retention.
